In the control panel, double click Modems--->Properties of your modem--->Under the 'General' tab, set the 'Maximum speed' field to 115200 for v.90 (56k) modems, 57600 for 28.8/33.6k modems.
Un mark the 'Only connect at this speed' option.
Under the 'Connection' tab, confirm that your Data, Parity, and Stop bit fields are set properly (usually 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit).
Select the 'Port Settings' option, mark the 'Use FIFO buffers' option and move the 'Receive Buffer' and 'Send Buffer' sliders to the maximum values (14, and 16, respectively).
Return to the connection tab window and select the 'Advanced' option and mark the 'Use error control' and 'compress data' . Mark the 'Use flow control' and 'Hardware (RTS/CTS)'

Frequent disconnects?-go to control panel, modem, properties of your modem, connection, advanced. In the extra setting option enter, S10=50, this extra string will allow your modem to stay connected for up to 5 seconds without a carrier.
To speed up your modems dialer - go to control panel, modem, properties of your modem, connection, advanced. In the extra setting option enter, S11=50.
To help increase Dialup Connection speed try this, open up My Computer, dbl click Dial up Networking, right click on your Dial up Shortcut, go to Properties, then Server Types tab, then un-check Log onto Network, click ok. If your not on a Network and just on the internet, you don't need this option checked and it can shave a few seconds off your connection time.
Optimize Port settings - Right click My Computer, click Properties, click Device Manager, Click Ports, Dbl click Com 1 or whatever port your modem is on, click Port Settings, click Bits Per Second and change it to 115200, click Flow control and change it to Hardware. Click Advanced, make sure FIFO buffers is checked. Click and drag Recieve and Transmit sliders to High click OK.
Not a tweak but useful information - to find your IP address (Internet Protocol) at the time you are connected (useful for internet gaming) go to Start, Run and type WINIPCFG in the Open box.
Find out why you connection is giving you problems - go to your MS-DOS prompt and type tracert (a space) then a domain name and then hit enter like this -"tracert www.uswest.net" without quotes and you'll see the route your signal goes to get to it's destination, the time it takes and if one of the Hops is especially slow. (or check out the Internet Traffic Report on the files / Utilities page)
Enable Auto Redial- Open My Computer>Dial up Networking folder>click on Connections at the top of the window, go to Settings, and put a check in Redial, and choose the amount of times to redial, click OK.
