Spirit Chain Success at
Corona del Sol High School
By Brady Murray, HERO Vice President of Publicity

Corona del Sol’s HERO program, led by Chris Jones, conducted its annual Spirit Chain Fundraiser.  This fundraiser took place October 15-19.  HERO members went to individual classrooms and asked students and teachers to contribute money that would be later donated to various charities.  The students bought strips of paper for a dime each that were later made into a spirit chain to decorate the football stadium for the Homecoming game on October 19.

In years past, this fundraiser has raised countless funds that were later donated to groups such as United Cerebral Palsy, Adopt a Family, Children’s Crisis Center, Etc.  This year the 2001-2002 HERO program raised a record $3851.80.  After our expenses for prizes, paper and candy the amount left to donate will be about $3200.     The fundraiser involved 30 classrooms or approximately 860 students along with the 47 HERO students.  This fundraiser has raised money for many charities as well as brought the students of Corona together to do something they believe in.

WHAT A GREAT JOB CORONA del SOL!
Arizona FCCLA is proud of your accomplishments.

HERO Service Rocks Dobson's World

Hi, I'm Chrissy Gooding the Vice President of Publicity for Dobson HERO/FCCLA. Our advisor is Kathy Fuller. Our focus this year is to make a difference in the lives of the people in our community. At the beginning of the year in our planning sessions we chose several service projects to be involved in. I'd like to tell you about some of them. Two of our service projects are being done with the other HERO class at Dobson. Their advisor is Lisa Doll. One of those is making scrapbooks for Arizona's Foster Children. This organization needs volunteers to help make scrapbook pages for children who are in foster care so that these children can document the events in their lives. All scrapbook supplies are provided by the organization and both HERO groups meet three or more times a month to make scrapbook pages. It's a lot of fun and we get some real creative pages being done. Periodically we send the scrapbook pages to Arizona's Foster Children and other volunteers work with the children to make a scrapbook.

This month both HERO groups will be collecting pumpkin pies to be given to the Salvation Army for their Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless.

We wanted to make a difference on Dobson's campus by working with the moderately mentally handicapped students. Over the next six months we will meet with them twice a month outside of our normal class time. We will be teaching them money skills, doing crafts, playing games, and doing line dancing. In doing this we hope to make new friends, make a difference in peoples' lives, and learn to appreciate the value of each individual.

Service is so important for people to do because it can help them feel better about themselves and appreciate what they have. Service should be required in every FCCLA chapter. Good luck and I hope everyone is having a good school year.
