Objectives Students will explain the beliefs of the Nazi party.
Students will list and explain the effects of the Treaty of Versailles on life in Germany and the rise of the Nazi party.
Words to Know Aryan- What the Nazis considered the “supermen” race. People of this race were white-skinned, light-haired, and light-eyed. They also had a certain skull size, height, ancestral religion, energy and strength. They were said to be the true decedents of the ancient Greeks and Romans. 
Inflation- An increase in the amount of money in circulation, resulting in a relatively sharp and sudden fall of its value and rise in prices.
Fascism-  A political movement that promotes an extreme form of nationalism, a denial of individual rights, and a one-party dictatorship.

Words to Know First Solution Remove Jews from the economy and to isolate them within Germany.
Second Solution To expel Jews from Germany.
Final Solution The annihilation of Jews began with the start of WWII in 1939.
Kristallnacht “Night of Broken Glass”. Shops, synagogues and homes were broken into and burned. Members of the SS and the police arrested 30,000 Jews, this was the first mass arrest of Jews.

Words to Know Caste- Social class that one is born into in India. Consists of four major Castes:
• Brahmans-Priests
• Kshatriyas-Warriors
• Vaisyas-Landowners and merchants
• Sudras-Servants and Peasants
Apartheid- An official policy of racial segregation practiced in South Africa from 1948-1994. In 1931 South Africa officially became an independent country, but the whites retained the political power in the country. In 1948 the National Party instituted Apartheid. Apartheid caused an almost complete separation of the races and banned social contact between whites and blacks. 13% of the land of South Africa was designated as “homelands” for the blacks who composed 75% of the population.

Objectives Students will consider the words of Gandhi and decipher their meaning.
Students will understand the nonviolent ways in which Gandhi “fought” the British.
Words to Know Amritsar-1919 the British passed the Rowlatt Act. The law allowed the government to jail protestors without trial for as long as 2 years. To protest, people gathered for a huge festival for fasting, prayer and to listen to political speeches. The British government had banned public meetings, but most Indians were not aware of this. General Dyer of the British army thought the Indians were knowingly breaking the law so he ordered his troops to open fire. The shooting lasted 10 minutes and when the smoke cleared 400 people had been killed, 1200 had been injured. This event was a turning point in the Indian demand for independence.

Words to Know Salt March- In colonial India, the British government had a strict monopoly on salt. No one could sell salt without first obtaining a license and charging a tax that was paid to the British. Gandhi protested this monopoly by organizing a 200 mile walk from his home that ended at the ocean where his followers made salt. 50,000 people were arrested as a result of this salt march.
