An Online course in learning to tame your pet

How to Motivate you under active older dog

"The best way to motivate an under active pet is to play a game of fetch" says Donna Libowski of the Colorado Pet Taming Association (P.T.A.) "Bring with you a stick small enough for the dog to be able to carry. Periodically throw the stick and play with him/her. Some owners like to use sounds familiar to the pet such as a small bark, or a growling noise. An aged canine needs plenty of attention and exorcize. Let them know that you want to play with them by getting down on all fours with them and make growling noises, ruffling them behind the ears. Your pet will love you for it."

How to Keep your pet from chewing on items you wish them not to

"Animals tend to get anxiety disorder when they are not getting the attention they crave, and tend to chew on items you wish them not to; like your favorite shoe, the crotch of your underwear, or even your arm. A popular way to stop your pet from doing such actions is to coat the item with a thin layer of cayenne pepper or Tabasco sauce (please don't try doing this in the case of your underwear). Most animals will try chewing on it only once and are guaranteed to not do it again. Remember, your pet is doing this because they want your attention. Don't yell at them, many pets crave the attention and will suffice for even negative reinforcement. When they latch onto something they shouldn't, firmly tell them 'no' and hand them a bone to gnaw on instead."

How to approach a new, timid or animal that snaps

"These canines you must approach cautiously. You must always approach them slowly in a friendly manner. It is instinct for a canine to show his teeth when he wants to ward off an enemy. Do not smile right away, or look this pet directly in the eyes. Get down on all fours and approach him slowly, in a lower position then he is. Speak calmly and quietly to this pet until they earn your trust. Do not make any fast movements that may frighten this animal. Once you have earned his/her trust, you may be much more free to play around with them."

How to calm a hyper and overactive pet

Some Canines tend to be a bit overactive at times. There are a few ways in dealing with this disorder. Always remember to speak to them in a calm manner, or singsong voice. Invoke a calm sort of emotion in your voice, letting them know you don't want to play fetch with them, or tug-a-war over a sock. If you control your pets diet, you may wish to set a certain type of food, with a tranquilizer in it, in their path. Stroke them softly and give them something constructive to do with their anxiety. A popular item is a bone, or take them to a large area where they may roam and play in the dirt. remember, the mountains are usually not a good place for these pets, for they make chase another animal they shouldn't, such as a skunk, porcupine, or an even larger animal that may injure them badly."

How to keep your pet from running away

"Some animals, particularly wolves, tend to run away. Quite simply, the best way to prevent this is to keep your pet happy. If a canine want's to run, he will. Make them feel as if they are in control and keep them enjoying themselves in the small backyard they are in, even though most would rather be out in the open. Give pets with this disorder plenty of space, yet always be aware of their whereabouts. Some will do anything to get out, such as digging deep holes under fences. Give these animals plenty of love and make them feel like they have a duty to stay near you. Make them feel like they are protecting you, even though you probably don't need it."
