DAILY CAMERA ENDORSES SECONDS COUNT! INITIATIVE
Boulder, CO––October 12, 2000––In an editorial published today, The Daily Camera newspaper endorsed the SECONDS COUNT! initiative measure, Question 2A on the November 7 special municipal election ballot. The Daily Camera is the first newspaper in the region to announce a recommendation on the issue, which would prohibit certain traffic devices on public streets. The paper’s position was based on interviews with supporters and opponents of the measure and review of substantial documentary material by an editorial board.
The Daily Camera’s editorial cited detailed research by the measure’s proponents into problems with traffic devices that slow emergency vehicles. The paper also praised the restrained, carefully crafted language and limited scope of the ordinance. And, it commended the measure’s sponsors for supporting a more effective, equitable approach to speed limit enforcement.
The editorial revealed the deciding factor in the endorsement was a conclusion that diverting traffic from one neighborhood to another in an attempt to control speeding was basically unfair. “We can't help wondering whether neighborhoods are interested in the devices more for reasons of privacy and exclusivity than for reasons of safety,” said the editors. “Are we forgetting that all the public streets belong to all the city's taxpayers, not to just the residents in a particular neighborhood?" The entire editorial is viewable on the internet at the following URL: http://www.thedailycamera.com/opinion/editorials/12eedit.html
SECONDS COUNT! is an initiative by Boulder, Colorado citizens to prohibit traffic devices that delay emergency response. SECONDS COUNT! is online at http://www.secondscount.org.
