We
arrived in St. Goar, Germany and stayed at the Hotel
Muehlenschenke, which we found on the Internet. See my Travel
Page for more information on this hotel. It was a beautiful place!
They have their own winery right on the premises,
pictured below is me sampling some. Yummy! In the background
you can see the ruins of the Castle (Burg) Rheinfels, which we hiked to
the next day.
This
is the sign that shows the trail to Burg Rheinfels. It took us about
20 minutes to reach our destination, but it was worth it! The trail
winds through the woods, and there were steps and railings along the way,
making the uphill climb a little easier.
Once
we got there, the view was incredible! Above is Leah looking down
on the town of St. Goar, with the Rhine River in the distance. The
castle's ruins have lots of caves and lookout points. Burg Rheinfels
was orginally built in 1245, and came under attack many times over the
centuries.
Below is me standing along one of the walls, with
vineyards and the Rhine in the distance.
Here's a good example of the many caves inside
Burg Rheinfels. Some of the caves were used for gunpowder storage,
so when the castle was under attack and the enemy got too close, KABLAMM!!
The gunpowder would explode, eliminating the enemy but still preserving
the main part of the castle.
Here I am, munching on Gummy Bears in St. Goar.
We stocked up on German chocolate and candy while we were there!! And there's
Leah, making friends with yet another cat with Burg Rheinfels in the distance.
She's a regular Mrs. Doolittle!!
Here's one more shot from the lookout of Burg
Rheifels. The view was too good to take only one picture!
After touring the castle, we got on a ferry along
the Rhine River to the town of Boppard. It took about 45 minutes by boat
to get there. Here's the two of us at another winery to sample the local
Reislings. Mmmmm, Reisling.....
