The Jordan's Arrive in Tennessee The family of Zachariah JORDAN arrived in Bedford County, in the eastern section of Tennessee around 1810. We believe they came from Georgia, where Zachariah met and married Tabitha STOKES in 1807 in Athens, Clark County, Georgia. According to later records, one of his children stated that Zachariah was from South Carolina. This has yet to be confirmed. From 1810 to about 1845 the Jordan family lived in Bedord County, where they farmed approximately 200 acres. Prior to 1830 Zachariah died, and is buried in an unmarked grave, originally covered with native field stones on the former Marsh-Jordan farm land in Bedford County. In 1834 Andrew Jackson Jordan (sometimes referred to as A. J. and also Jackson) married Martha Ursery/Essary. Her exact name is not known. On February 22, 1939 Jackson sold his 1/6 portion of his fathers estate consisting of some 200 acres to his brother Jefferson. Sometime around the end of 1839 the 4 oldest sons of Zachariah namely Ailsy, Zachariah Jr., Andrew Jackson, and Thomas and their families all moved to Henderson County. Around 1845 Tabitha (Stokes) Jordan and all of the rest of the families, with the exception of Jefferson F. had moved to Madison/Henderson County area in western Tennessee. Most of the families settled in Henderson County, but by 1850 Jackson had moved to Madison County, where he participated in some land deals. By 1855 he made no more land transactions in Madison County, and no record of his family had been found after that time. In February, 1853 his daughter Mary A. JORDAN married Henry Wilson HOUSTON. The marriage probably took place in Henderson County, but the courthouse has burned several times. There were no records of it in Madison County. In 1856 they left, along with, I believe, other families for Texas. We do know that her sister Eliza and her brother Arch also moved to Texas. It is only an assumption, but I believe that her father A. J. Jordan was in the caravan. They traveled from Tennessee through Arkansas and on to Rusk County, Texas.
